Founded in 2004 The Tibet Health and Education foundation’s first project was the construction and opening of the Dedhan Menkhang (hospitalfclinic) in Serlung, Tibet. The program of Tibet Health and Education foundation inspired by the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who has always advised us to help others, also inspired by the great human beings of our century such as Mother Teresa.
Some background information of the Tibet Health and Education foundation. In the early 1960’s Sonam worked as a nurse and Wangchuk as an interpreter with the Dr. Tom Dooley Foundation in India. At that time there were thousands of Tibetan refugees scattered across Northern India working in road construction camps. This U.S. based foundation provided a medical mobile unit for the Tibetan refugees. In addition to the mental and emotional stress of separating from families and leaving Tibet, the extreme change in climate, altitude, and diet let to illness and death among Tibetans. The program was greatly appreciated by Tibetan refugees. We both had a great opportunity working for the Dooley Foundation to help our fellow Tibetans in need. As Tibetan refugees who had the opportunity of immigrating to the United States, we have always felt a need to share our good fortune with other Tibetans in a meaningful manner.
In early 2004, we were given an opportunity to fulfill. our dreams of helping Tibetans in Tibet, when the local leader of Serlung and Bertse villages contacted us. These local leaders requested that we help to build a healthcare facility for about 600 people living in this remote area of western Tibet, where they live as one of the highest elevations ill the world and suffer from harsh weather and limited access to the modern world. At the time of the request there were no healthcare facilities in the region and villagers had to travel long distances by horse or foot to receive care. Fortunately, after a long search Norbu Tsering a Tibetan physician, trained in both Tibetan and modern medicine, was recruited to Dedhan Menkhang which means that we have both a physician and nurse to serve the people of Serlung and Bertse.
During the summer of 2006, Wangchuk and Tenzin Dorjee traveled to Serlung, Tibet. We were able to tour the Dedhan Menkhang and meet with the local leaders and people of Serlung and Bertse, during these meetings we had the opportunity to discuss the future programs, as we will see in the short video.
Now we are launching the next phase of the Tibet Health and Education Foundation. Our goal is to make this a sustainable and beneficial project for the people of Tibet. We hope that you will help us achieve our goal and would like to thank you in advance for your generous support for a greatly needed health and
education program for Serlung and Bertse villages for generations to come.
Let us join hands and hearts to share our love and knowledge for our brothers and sisters, giving them hope, health, and opportunity that will give us peace and happiness forever.
Thank you,
Wangchuk and Sonam Dorjee
